April26, 1928
My beloved wife, Hazel M. Caldwell was born at Fremont, Ohio, October26, 1882, and was the only daughter of Michael Pumtan (sic) and Malissa (Inman) Putman,both have preceded her. Her father was the County Engineer at the time of her birth, andafter the completion of his term, moved back to the old homestead, one made by his fatherin the early settlement of Ohio, near Rising Sun, Ohio. On this farm she grew towomanhood, and every one she came in contact with was her friend. She received hereducation in the country schools, the near by towns, and finished her education at Toledo,Ohio.
We first met at graduation exercises of the class which included herbrother Alfred R. Putman and myself, at Valporaiso, Indiana, and I knew at once I had meta fine character, with true and lovable disposition. We were married at Bowling Green,Ohio, February 2, 1910, and within a few days came to Vinita to make our home. Twodaughters, Ruth and Lucille, came to bless our home. She was a member of the BaptistChurch of Vinita, and the Pythian Sisters at Vinita. She was called home April 10, 1928,and I know she now dwells with her good parents in the home prepared for us by our Father.She leaves surviving her our two daughters Ruth and Lucile (sic), myself, and Alfred R.Putnam (sic), of Valporaiso, Indiana, a brother, a great many relatives, and a host offriends. It can truthfully be said that she did not leave a single enemy.
She was a real, true, and devoted mother and wife. She was proud of herfamily, and loved her home associates, and her neighbors. It was here she proved hersterling worth and character. Always cheerful, always looking after the needs of ourchildren and myself, always placing home above all worldly things, always teachingtruthfulness and honesty, always teaching righteous living, always teaching kindconsideration for others, living a true and lovable life, and making every effort to rearher children in such a way that they would be good, clean, moral women, and a help andbetterment of mankind while here.
She loved life. It was sweet and dear to her. Yet she faced hercondition bravely. When I met her at Mayes, there were tears in my eyes but a smile on hersweet lips, and she told me if the worst came to the worst she would leave two sweetdaughters to comfort me. Why she could be taken is beyond my understanding. Her work wasnot finished. Yes, she was so good, so lovely, her advice so clean and wholesome, and lifeas exemplified by her was so good, clean, and wholesome, it would seem best that sheremain here. But God in his wisdom deemed otherwise.
Her passing away has left us with heavy hearts. We miss her so. Ourgrief, our deep love for her, and admiration of her can not be expressed in mere words.She is gone from among us, yet she will always live with us, counsel, advise, andinfluence us for good. While our hearts are so heavy, and our grief is so deep, it wouldbe beyond endurance if it were not that we know she is now among the angels in heavenwhere there is no suffering or sorrow, and that we shall meet her there.
She lived in deeds, not years, and her life fully exemplified thethought of the poet in these two stanzas:

I live for those who love me.
For those I know are true,
For the heaven that smiles above me
And awaits my spirit too;
For all human tied that bind me,
For the task by God assigned me,
For the bright hopes left behind me,
And the food that I can do.
I live for those who love me.
For those who know me true,
For the heaven that smiles above me
And awaits my spirit too;
For the wrong that needs assistance,
For the cause that lacks assistance,
For the future in the distance,
And the good that I can do.
