Noles News: FSU softball selected as regional host for 10th straight NCAA Tournament (2024)

Recruiting

2025 edge prospect Nicolas Clayton out of Gainesville received an offer over the weekend — the 6-4.5, 205-pound player is considered a three-star by 247Sports but hasn’t been ranked by the other recruiting services. He currently holds additional offers from the UCF Knights, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Duke Blue Devils, Wisconsin Badgers, Kansas Jayhawks, Michigan State Spartans, Vanderbilt Commodores and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, amongst others:

Baseball

Florida State baseball had a rough weekend on the road vs. the Pitt Panthers, dropping two of three games and suffering a series loss that will likely hang heavy as FSU jockeys for postseason position:

Cal Raleigh is the first American League catcher to hit 10+ home runs in his team's first 40 games of a season since Jorge Posada-NYY (10 HR) in 2003.

Softball

Florida State softball fell short of clinching another ACC Tournament title over the weekend, dropping a close matchup to the Duke Blue Devils:

The pitching matchup? Allison Royalty for FSU and Jala Wright for Duke.

Both Royalty and Wright had a pitchers duel going through three innings. Each pitcher had their share of baserunners, but nothing to show for either side. As the visiting team, FSU led off the 4th inning with a walk to Jaysoni Beachum. Now facing Wright for the second time on the day, Kalei Harding sent a 2-run shot to break the tie.

Now 2-0, and no outs, Isa Torres singled. Following the hit, Michaela Edenfield doubled, which was enough to bring Torres home and give the ‘Noles another run. With three runs being score, Wright departed for Cassidy Curd. Curd shut down the rest of the Seminole order.

In the bottom of the frame, Duke started pressing after an error and single. Two runners on and now outs, Ashtyn Danley relieved Royalty. A ground out got the firs out, moving runners up to second and third. A sacrifice fly followed, deep enough to score a run. A double added another run for the Blue Devils, giving them another runner on second. Danley was able to escape the inning, but Duke made it 3-2.

For the bottom of the 6th, Danley had a pair of walks with one out. A single up the middle came all the way around to tie the game at 3-3. With runners at second and third, an intentional walk was initiated to load the bases.

Looking for a force at home on an infield single wasn’t able to be fielded clearly, and Duke took their first lead of the day. Still with runners on every base, a force was applied at home to get the second out. A single up the middle scored a pair, and a misplayed ball reloaded the bases.

Duke held on to a 6-3 lead now in the top of the 7th inning. Still with Curd in the circle, the Blue Devils reliever had two outs before walking Amaya Ross. Despite the runner on base, a ball back to Curd ended the game, with FSU falling to Duke 6-3.

All Sports

Florida State men’s golf will kick off NCAA Regional play today at the Stanford Golf Course:

The Seminoles are one of six No. 1 seeds in the six regions played, and look to defend their top seed against 13 other schools. FSU’s competition includes Ole Miss (2), Illinois (3), Texas A&M (4), Stanford (5), UCLA (6), SMU (7), Missouri (8), Fresno State (9), UNLV (10), Augusta (11), Liberty (12), Sacramento State (13) and Siena (14).

The Top 8 seeds in the region are all ranked in the Top 50 of the Clippd rankings used by the NCAA.

The Top 5 finishing programs in the upcoming regional advance to the NCAA Championship held May 24-29 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa located in Carlsbad, Calif.

Florida State looks to advance to its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship, which would be the program’s longest streak since making it six years in a row from 2012-17. A Seminole has individually won an NCAA Regional in each of the last two years, with Luke Clanton winning last year’s Morgan Hill Regional and Brett Roberts winning the Palm Beach Regional in 2022.

The Seminoles tied last year’s record with four All-ACC selections, as Gray Albright, Clanton, Frederik Kjettrup and Tyler Weaver each were recognized by the conference. Weaver also won ACC Freshman of the Year, while head coach Trey Jones won co-ACC Coach of the Year. FSU’s five-player lineup includes plenty of NCAA postseason experience with Cole Anderson, Roberts, Albright, Kjettrup and Clanton. Anderson begins play for the Seminoles on Monday at 11:30 a.m. ET/8:30 a.m. PT.

Florida State track and field athletes Jeremiah Davis and Dajaz DeFrand were named Most Valuable Performers of the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championship:

Davis repeated as the Men’s Field MVP after scoring 20 points behind two wins. Davis defended his title in the long jump champion on Friday with a mark of 7.97m before winning gold in the triple jump with a mark of 16.71m. It was the first time since 2018 that FSU has won the event.

DeFrand placed first in the women’s 100-meter at 11.08 after she set the ACC meet record in prelims at 10.88. DeFrand also repeated as champion in the 200 marking the first person in program history to earn a gold medal at back-to-back ACC’s. She was named the Women’s MVP for the second time in as many tries.

In addition to Davis and DeFrand’s four individual gold medals, the Seminoles added 13medals including three gold.

Ismael Kone took home gold in the 100, clocking a time of 10.25. He also placed fifth in the 200 with a time of 20.85.

Ahmari Avin placed 12th in the discus throw with a lifetime best 47.92m.

The men’s 4x100 relay team behind Keshaun Black, Kone, Alex Collier, and Jaiden Rollins took home gold for the first time since 2021, clocking a time of 39.49.

Tyson Williams took home his first career ACC gold medal in the 110 hurdles, clocking a lifetime best and sixth-fastest time in school history at 13.62. Andre Korbmacher followed Williams in the hurdles, earning second team All-ACC with a time 13.81, placing fourth.

Kyvon Tatham took home bronze in the men’s triple jump with a lifetime best of 15.73m. LaQuan Ellis followed in fifth with a career best of 15.71m. Jayden-Louis Charles concluded the event in sixth with his best of 15.32m.

Alexandra Webster added eight points for the Noles in the women’s 100 hurdles, crossing the line in 13.04 for silver. Tyra Wilson earned first-team All-ACC in the 400 hurdles, establishing a lifetime best and third-fastest time in FSU history at 56.30, winning silver.

Kaniya Johnson and Liana Tyson tied for bronze in the 100, crossing the line at 11.46. Johnson followed DeFrand in the 200, placing seventh at 23.46.

Suus Altorf battled her way to a bronze medal (4:13.22) in the 1,500.

The women’s 4x100 relay team behind Webster, DeFrand, Johnson and Tyson placed second with a time of 43.68.

Kayla Pinkard competed in the women’s long jump, placing ninth with a mark of 12.30m.

Tyra Wilson, Ava Klein, Kaelyaah Liburd and Jaden Francis rallied five points in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:34.80, placing fourth.

David Mullarkey led the Noles in fourth in the 5,000, adding five points with a time of 13.41.76. Cooper Schroeder followed in 16th with a lifetime best of 14:04.5. Zachary Cloud concluded the event in 24th with a time of 14:18.12.

Martin Prodanov scored two points for the Noles in the 1,500m, placing seventh with a time of 3:43.99.

British Wilkerson stamped sixth place in the men’s 400-meters with a time of 46.78.

The men’s team finished fourth with a total of 95 points, while the No. 17 women finished fifth at 68.

Qualified student-athletes will compete at the NCAA East Region Championships in Lexington, Kentucky from May 22-25.

No. 10 Florida State men’s tennis fell 4-3 to No. 7 Tennessee in the third round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship:

The day began with the tightest doubles match of the season as Loris Pourroy and Youcef Rihane strung together three straight games to remain perfect as a pair in the championshipon Court 2. Courts 1 and 3 each went to a tiebreaker to decide the doubles point. Jamie Connel and Alex Bulte stepped up in a huge moment and delivered the 7-5 tiebreak victory to take the first point of the match. Court 1 was left unfinished at 6-6 in the tiebreaker.

Tennessee tied the match with a win on Court 2 before Bulte answered back. He found himself down 4-2 before firing off four straight games to win set one before winning the final four games in set two to restore FSU’s lead.

Joshua Dous-Karpenschif followed suit with a 6-4 first set victory before winning the final three games in set two to win his match and claim the third point. Dous-Karpenschif is spotless in singles through three rounds of tournament play.

The Seminoles dropped matches on Courts 1 and 5 before Tennessee outlasted the third-set tiebreaker on Court 4 to end the match.

Florida State finishes one of its greatest seasons in program history to date at 23-8. 23 wins ties the fourth-largest number of wins in a season and the most since 2018. The Seminoles claimed their first-ever ACC Championship with four wins in four days to become the lowest seed to ever win the competition. Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc rallied from 5-2 down in the third set and claimed one of the best moments in collegiate tennis history.
