Sarasota Memorial Health Care System

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is a level II trauma center, full-service public health system offering specialized expertise in heart, vascular, cancer, orthopedic and neuroscience services, as well as a state-of-the-art cancer care center and a network of outpatient centers, urgent care centers, laboratories, diagnostic imaging and physician practices, skilled nursing and rehabilitation among our many programs. Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota Campus is a 901-bed, level II trauma center, acute-care facility and is the only hospital in Sarasota County providing obstetrical services, pediatrics, Level III neonatal intensive care, psychiatric services for patients of all ages and a Level II Trauma Center. SMH Sarasota Campus serves as the fellow's primary training site. Among its many achievements, SMH is the only hospital in the State of Florida that has received continued 5-star rating from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) since these awards were instituted in 2016; achieved its 5th Magnet Recognition reflecting 20 years of continuous designation and was recognized among Fortune/Merative’s top 40 Teaching Hospitals in 2022.

Sarasota County Fire Department

Sarasota County’s fire service represents over 100 years of dedicated and heroic service by professional firefighters, paramedics and EMTs. The Sarasota County Fire Department (SCFD) is an all-hazards department that provides fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS) and special operations, which includes response to hazardous materials and technical rescue incidents. SCFD protects over 451 square miles of land and is surrounded by 37 miles of open shoreline along the Gulf of Mexico. Sarasota County provides services to approximately 433,742 permanent residents (2020 Census). SCFD is dedicated to providing quality customer service and achieving its mission: Strengthening community through a network of skilled professionals dedicated to saving lives and protecting property. SCFD responds to over 70,000 calls per year, operates 60+ first out advanced life support (ALS) units including 24 ambulances/rescues with approximately 550 frontline personnel.

Bayflite – Florida

Bayflite is a high-volume helicopter EMS program in Sarasota County. This HEMS system completes both scene and interfacilty missions. The fellow will have dedicated flight shifts with Bayflite.

Town of Longboat Key Fire Rescue

The Longboat Key Fire Rescue Department is comprised of 33 line personnel divided into three shifts and supported by 6 management/administrative personnel. Each of the three shifts consists of one Assistant Chief, two Lieutenants and eight firefighter/medics. Our mission is to protect life, property the environment by providing exceptional emergency services through training, education and customer service. We are also striving to become the best provider of quality Fire/Advanced Life Support (ALS) Emergency Medical Services within the region.

City of Venice Fire Rescue

Since 1926, Venice Fire Department has proudly worked to keep our citizens, businesses, and visitors safe. We currently have three stations that provide Advanced Life Support services and respond to more than 7,000 incidents annually. Our mission is to promote, preserve and protect the life safety of all of our members within the community through the utilization of an effective fire prevention program, that focuses on quality.

City of Northport Fire Rescue

The North Port Fire Rescue District is a career, all-hazards response agency providing fire suppression, emergency medical response with advanced life support capabilities, technical rescue, robust fire prevention services, and emergency management to include mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery for significant incidents. The district provides emergency services to North Port and to unincorporated portions of Sarasota and Charlotte counties utilizing interlocal and mutual aid agreements.

Sarasota Bradenton International Airport Fire Rescue

The Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Department provides daily aircraft fire protection and airport medical services, 24 hours per day. The ARFF Department employs Florida State Certified Firefighters/Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) who are ready to assist the traveling public, airport tenants and employees when any emergency or medical need may arise. The ARFF Department responds to all aircraft emergencies and have undergone extensive training to comply with Federal Aviation Administration regulations for Airport Certification. The Department is equipped with four state-of-the-art ARFF vehicles together with supporting vehicles and equipment to respond to any aircraft emergency on the airport. The Airport has earned the highest rating given by the FAA for its ARFF services which is to ensure safety for the traveler. In addition, the ARFF Department is also linked to all surrounding emergency agencies which operate under a mutual aid condition should additional services be required on or off the airport.

Suncoast Technical College

The Suncoast Technical College offers EMT and Paramedic programs. The students complete their clinical time within the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System and in the Sarasota County Fire Department. The fellow will have the opportunity to teach these students in the classroom, hospital, and in the field throughout the fellowship program.

Public Safety Communications Center

The Sarasota County Public Safety Communications (PSC) is committed to the delivery of critical information to first responders and partner agencies to ensure the health and safety of the community. The fellow will have the opportunity to oversee communications and emergency medical dispatch (EMD).

Emergency Management

The region is no stranger to natural disasters (hurricanes). When we are unable to respond to calls for service to due situations beyond our control, the fellow will participate in Emergency Operations Center (EOC) operations. The fellow will also participate in training and planning throughout the program.

Lifeguards

The fellow will train in water rescue with the Sarasota County Lifeguards. The Lifeguard staff training includes passing biannual qualification testing and becoming First Responder Certified. Skilled professionals are now responsible for public safety at six beaches spread over a 35-mile area of the Gulf Coast.

Sarasota SWAT/TEMS

The fellow will train on a regular basis with the Sarasota Police and Sheriff’s Office SWAT teams to gain experience in tactical emergency medical support (TEMS). The fellow will also have the opportunity to attend the Florida SWAT Association Tactical Medic Course. The course will cover the topics of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) and TECC Tactical Emergency casualty care, including; the phases of care, hemorrhage control, hemostatic agents, airway control, and treatment of penetrating trauma to the chest. As well as basic tactical operations and movements, high-threat extractions and more.
