If you are an engineer, you may obtain an H-1B and also do your PERM labor certification without having a PE (Professional Engineer) license, as long as you are working under supervision of a licensed PE. However, if you are trying to file as NIW EB-2 or EB-1, you would really need to have a PE. Also to advance in your career, in order to apply for projects with the federal, state or local government, and to manage engineering projects, you must be a licensed PE. This is a complicated process involving individual state requirements for licensure and taking the PE exams, Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and the particular exam for your field of engineering, the Principles and Practices of Engineering (PPE). NCEES administers the engineering licensure exams. The State may also have you sit an Ethics of Engineering exam. Effective May 2023, Ontario has implemented a revised licensing framework for Professional Engineers (P.Eng.), which simplifies the process for internationally trained engineers to obtain the license. The updated framework eliminates the need for Canadian experience, making the P.Eng. license more accessible to skilled engineers from all over the world.The change has been driven by the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) framework by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). Instead of assessing where an engineer gained their expertise, the CBA framework focuses on evaluating the "how" and "what" of an engineer's competency. This new approach encourages a global perspective in the Canadian engineering industry and provides equal opportunities to all applicants.You can read the complete article below.
