Join us this #TechTuesday as we catch up with Maria G. Burns, Ph.D., for a Quick TECHtalk!1. What is your primary area of research focus?I use STEM tools, such as data science, policy analysis, and quality and risk management, to solve problems in physical security, operational efficiency, and policy. Having a solid foundation in the maritime industry and security experience has armed me with strategic thinking skills and a practical understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced in government and industrial sectors.2. What course(s) are you teaching this semester?TLIM 4378 Senior Project (Practicum) and TLIM 3371 Budgeting & Financial Principles.3. What have you been up to since we saw you last?I have much great news to share, including my promotion to tenure-track professor, becoming the Principal Investigator in a State Department research grant, delivering a TEDx Talk discussing how COVID-19 exacerbated human trafficking and hosting the TLIM program's second Annual Conference. The conference was a very successful event, with 20 speakers and over 100 attendees. My deep gratitude goes to Chair Amaury Lendasse for supporting and encouraging every new project and initiative.4 What accomplishment during your time here at UH are you most proud of so far?The University of Houston has helped me accomplish many dreams, including obtaining significant government grants, becoming the Program Coordinator of the TLIM program and being elected a Faculty Senator for Research and Scholarship. In return, I want to give back through a "golden triangulation" of bringing together corporate leaders, faculty and students in win-win partnerships through enhanced networks.5. What are you most looking forward to in the coming academic year?We researchers are warriors of the mind: we devote our lives to confronting challenges and devising solutions for a better world. Hence, I look forward to meaningful collaborations with university faculty and staff, industry, and students on research, teaching, and service projects that will make a measurable difference in our community.6. What is your favorite spot on Campus?I enjoy the student lounge areas, where we can see the students working together, radiating positivity while building their future success.

❗ I finally went to Dartmouth on Saturday. It reminded me of something I said in my final days of covering college basketball, though that wasn't why I was there. With that trip, I finally made it to every Division I campus in New England.💡 But this trip was far more important than anything I everdid in the world of college sports - it was for the first annual Tuck National Security and Innovation Conference.I first learned of it from someone at Innovation Summit only a week and a half earlier. Upon looking into it, I knew I had to go.✅ It far surpassed my expectations, and I know I'm not alone in thinking this has the potential to be much bigger in future years.✅ The sessions were great, including a discussion about the public sector and then exploring the relationship between academia, government, industry and venture capital, with a later one on government and national security. The relationship between those sectors is always complicated, but in the realm of national security and defense, even more so,and that was clear in the great discussion between more than just the great panelists. You go to something like this to connect with others as well, and this event was tremendous for that. At events like this, networking comes even more naturally because there is much shared interest built right in to the event.➡ I spent a good deal of time later following up with people I met - without following up, meeting people doesn't amount to anything - and this only reinforces how Saturday can be only the beginning. After passing by Hanover a number of times en route to Vermont, this was a great stop to make for the event and future considerations, not the least of which is coming back up on November 14 for the NH Tech Alliance Tech Connect event at the Dartmouth Regional Technology Center in nearby Lebanon.A big thank you to the The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and New North Ventures (title sponsor) for a great event and giving us all much to look forward to.#nationalsecurity #innovation #networking #dartmouth

Where are my fellow builders at and what are you doing tomorrow at 2 PM EST/ 11 AM PST? In each role I have had throughout my career, I have been the first person in the position. Creating something from nothing. Operating as a start-up of one. Building programs, partnerships, processes, pathways, and sandwiches (they don't all have to start with P and I always need snacks) to help individuals and institutions reach their goals. I love it! This is why I am so excited about the session tomorrow with Noah Pickus and Bryan Penprase, authors of "The New Global Universities: Reinventing Education ins the 21st Century." In addition to hearing from the authors themselves, we have partnered with 6 of our community SMEs to lead breakout sessions. Come join the conversation with Azeb Tadesse, Ph.D., Stacey Freeman, Joe Testani,Dawn Bunja, Sam Weber, and Chris Wenger. If you work in Higher Ed, Education, L&D, or EdTech - you should register! If you can't make it I will be sure to share the recording. #HigherEd #StartupUniversity #InnovationApplied

What does it mean to be a land-grant university in the 21st century? USU’s new President Cantwell reflects on this question below. Her framework and definitions are exciting: USU will remain committed to accessible, world-class teaching and research as we have done since the 1880s. But we also will drive important innovations, connecting and building with our communities on many of humanity’s greatest challenges. A great time to be an Aggie.https://lnkd.in/gxJ6TFab
