Think cicadas are weird? Check out superfans, who eat the bugs, use them in art and even striptease

FOREST PARK, Illinois (AP) — The periodical cicadas that have blanketed parts of the American Midwest this spring are strange creatures, but they have nothing on some of their superfans. There's the woman who has taken more than 4,600 photos of them in her backyard and treats them almost like children. There's the New York chef who collects them for cooking, including tempura cicada. There's the Wisconsin artist who incorporates the hardy insects into her work. But the capper might be a professor from Ohio who worked up a kind of cicada striptease that has her bursting out of a cardboard costume as a red-eyed, adult nymph.

Historic SS United States is ordered out of its berth in Philadelphia. Can it find new shores?

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A federal judge says a historic ocean liner that still holds the transatlantic speed record it set more than 70 years ago must leave its berth in Philadelphia by Sept. 12. The decision issued Friday culminated a years-old rent dispute between the conservancy that oversees the 1,000-foot SS United States and its landlord. It stemmed from an August 2021 decision by the landlord to double the ship’s daily dockage rate. The conservancy wouldn't accept the increase. The judge ruled the conservancy’s failure to pay the new rate didn't amount to a contract breach. But she also found the berthing agreement is terminable at will under Pennsylvania contract law.

Key moments at the Tonys: Jay-Z and Hillary Clinton in the house, strides for women and a late upset

NEW YORK (AP) — The Tonys are often the most entertaining of awards shows, with Broadway performers showing their best work. Sunday’s show was no exception, with buzzy performances peppered with special appearances from the likes of Jay-Z and Hillary Clinton. As always, the Tonys crowned both beloved veterans and exciting newcomers, and had the added factor of making history for women. Female directors accounted for seven of 10 directing nods, including four of five best musical nominees. The night ended in surprise with a best musical win for “The Outsiders,” an adaptation of the classic young adult novel.

German investigators seize cocaine worth 2.6 billion euros, calling it their biggest find ever

BERLIN (AP) — German investigators say they discovered 35.5 metric tons of cocaine worth 2.6 billion euros ($2.78 billion) on different container ships and made seven arrests in connection with what they called the largest cocaine find in the country ever. Prosecutors in the western city of Duesseldorf said Monday that they were initially tipped off by Colombian authorities and that investigators seized almost 25 tons of cocaine in the port of the northern city of Hamburg last year, a further 8 tons in the Dutch port of Rotterdam and almost 3 tons in Colombia. The drugs were hidden between vegetables and fruit. They have arrested seven suspects aged between 30 and 54, who are believed to be behind the smuggling.

Bryson DeChambeau wins another US Open with a clutch finish to deny Rory McIlroy

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau is the U.S. Open champion for the second time. It was another thriller at Pinehurst No. 2 that came down to the last hole. He was tied with Rory McIlroy, who was in the group in front. McIlroy missed a 4-foot par putt to fall one shot behind. DeChambeau blasted out of a bunker from 55 yards away to 4 feet and made the par putt for a 71. It wasn't quite the famous putt of Payne Stewart in 1999 when he made par from 15 feet. But DeChambeau celebrated the second major for a LIV Golf player.

An emotional win for theaters, Hollywood: ‘Inside Out 2’ scores massive $155 million opening

Hollywood’s summer movie anxieties gave way to joy this weekend with the massive debut of Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.” The animated sequel earned $155 million in ticket sales from 4,440 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. That is according to studio estimates Sunday. Not only is it the second-highest opening weekend in Pixar’s nearly 29 years of making films and the second-biggest animated opening ever. It’s also the biggest of 2024 which had not had any films debut over $100 million. With an estimated $140 million from international showings, “Inside Out 2” had a staggering, and record-breaking, $295 million global debut.

Longtime Southern Baptist leader Paul Pressler, who was accused of sexual abuse, dies at 94

HOUSTON (AP) — Paul Pressler, a leading figure of the Southern Baptist Convention who was accused of sexual abuse and later settled a lawsuit over the allegations, has died. He was 94. Pressler’s death on June 7 was announced in an obituary posted online by a Houston funeral home. A funeral service for Pressler was held Saturday. Pressler was one of the co-architects of the Southern Baptist Convention’s so-called conservative resurgence in the 1980s that pushed America’s largest Protestant denomination in a more hardline direction. A 2017 lawsuit prompted allegations that Pressler had sexually assaulted or abused several boys and young men over various years. The lawsuit was settled in December.

Milan Fashion Week: Prada projects youthful optimism, not escapism, in a turbulent world

MILAN (AP) — Milan designers have expressed their concern over the global turbulence through their collections without making overt statements. Miuccia Prada said that she wanted to project optimism at Sunday's Prada show and isn't promoting escapism. The designers behind the Simon Cracker upcycled brand said that not using their platform to comment would be “irresponsible." They dedicated their collection titled “A Matter of Principle” to “the children victims of matters of principle."

Divers find remains of Finnish WWII plane that was shot down by Moscow with a US diplomat aboard

HELSINKI (AP) — The World War II mystery of what happened to a Finnish passenger plane after it was shot down over the Baltic Sea by Soviet bombers appears to finally be solved more than eight decades later. The plane was carrying American and French diplomatic couriers in June 1940 when it was shot down just days before Moscow annexed the Baltic states. All nine people on board the plane were killed including the two-member Finnish crew and the seven passengers including an American diplomat. A diving and salvage team in Estonia said this week that it had located well-preserved parts and debris from the Junkers Ju 52 plane operated by Finnish airline Aero which is now Finnair.

Derek Jeter's New York castle might finally have a buyer

GREENWOOD LAKE, N.Y. (AP) — Former New York Yankees superstar Derek Jeter has found a potential buyer for his upstate New York castle after the sprawling lakefront property had its price tag slashed by more than half. The property, known as Tiedemann Castle, went into contract with a buyer in late May after the asking price was lowered to $6.3 million. It was first listed around about six years ago for more than $14 million and had at one point failed to sell at auction. The home in Greenwood Lake, a bucolic expanse in upstate New York near the New Jersey border, is made up of three parcels with six bedrooms and 13 bathrooms, and includes extensive gardens, a lagoon and an infinity pool.
